The National President heads the Union, gives leadership and guidance to its major policy directions, represents the membership at national level meetings, has final directive power on administration and financial matters, may deal with correspondence directed to the National President when not delegating this function to the National Secretary or General Secretary.

The portfolio is the administrative head of the Union, gives direction under the guidance of the Constitution and the National Office Bearers to the National Administrative Office staff, works closely with the General Secretary of the Union (if one has been appointed), deals with correspondence and responses from the Union, as directed by the National Executive Committee or the National President.

The portfolio is responsible for the financial control, administration, accounting and auditing of the Union as directed in the Constitution, gives direction to cost containments, expenditure, monitors incoming funds and subscriptions, gives direction to the financial control of Branches, is the final word in use of funds, responsible for reporting to the Department of Labour as required under the Labour Relations Act and to the membership Congressionals in terms of the Consititution.

The portfolio deals with co-ordinating policy development on behalf of the Union in response to stimuli from the education sector and institutions based on feedback from Branches or as directed by the National Executive Committee.
